Hard Drive Failures

Google continues to mine its database of cheap commodity hard drive statistics. But, sadly, the names have been changed to protect the innocent.

Massive Google hard drive survey turns up very interesting things - Engadget

drives often needed replacement for issues that SMART drive status polling didn’t or couldn’t determine, and 56% of failed drives did not raise any significant SMART flags

Big Blue Switching?

IBM has a pilot program to see if their staff would like Macs. Apparently 86% of the pilot group elected to keep the MacBook rather than suffer Vista. It also seems that Lotus Notes is headed for the Mac and iPhone.

IBM’s software strategy is also embracing the Mac platform, with a new version of Lotus Notes and an integrated package of office productivity software based on OpenOffice and branded as Lotus Symphony being slated for release for the Mac later this year. Support for Notes email and calendaring on the iPhone and iPod Touch is also reported to be in IBM’s plans.

Scientist’s Prayer

A good article on doing science: Sure, there is a small chance it could mean the end of the world as we know it. But there is an opportunity cost associated with not doing science, as well.

Large Hadron Collider - Risk of a Black Hole - Dennis Overbye - Physics - New York Times

In Walker Percy’s “Love in the Ruins,” the protagonist, a doctor and an
inventor, recites what he calls the scientist’s prayer. It goes like
this:

“Lord, grant that my work increase knowledge and help other men.

“Failing that, Lord, grant that it will not lead to man’s destruction.

“Failing that, Lord, grant that my article in Brain be published before the destruction takes place.”

Planets begin to align in Yahoo deal

If Yahoo acquires AOL, that would also bring Bebo into play. The resulting search/social combo would have to interest Google, given its OpenSocial plans. Meanwhile, NewsCorp is trotting its MySpace social network Microsoft’s way to help them sweeten their own offer. Either way, Google or Microsoft would round out their social offerings nicely, while increasing their user base and search capacity. Stay tuned.

In Another Surprise Twist, AOL-Yahoo Deal Said to Be Close At Hand

Things are moving fast in the Yahoo-Microsoft drama. All the different forces are aligning for an endgame. The latest twist: The WSJ is reporting that Yahoo is close to signing a deal to combine with AOL.

This at the same time that Yahoo is doing a limited test to place Google ads in its search results. Meanwhile, News Corp, which Yahoo once hoped would be its white knight, is said to be turning on Yahoo and talking to Microsoft about joining its bid. Obviously a lot of balls are up in the air right now, and anything is possible.

This does *not* mean you are autistic.

Sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar.

Asperger’s and IT: Dark secret or open secret?

What Jeremy is not good at is suffering fools in the workplace or dealing with the endless bureaucracy of the modern corporation. If someone is wrong — if their idea just plain won’t work — he says so, simply states the fact. That frankness causes all manner of upset in the office, he’s discovered.

These IT professionals are all autistic. Bob and Ryno have Asperger’s Syndrome (AS), sometimes referred to as Asperger’s Disorder; Jeremy has high-functioning autism (HFA).
